How To Build Motivation PassivelyAlthough the word motivation suggests hard work and pushing yourself, some of the most effective motivational results come from passive motivation. This is actually easier to achieve than you might expect. In fact, you may even be passively motivational now without doing anything; either you're very knowledgeable about a subject, or you have a magnetic personality. Either way, this is what's known as being passively motivating. By having this knowledge, it will make you an authority on something; however, be sure not to abuse this authority, and let it help motivate others instead.
If you've ever noticed people listen to you when you speak, it's not just because they like you as a
friend - it's more than likely because of your personality. Not only that, but they will also be listening because they have trust in both you and what you're saying. This kind of listening power is your authority over them; because you can affect and influence others, people will automatically look up to you in the same way they would a leader.
This works in all aspects of your life. For example, by taking the time to get to know your colleagues at work and listening to them, they will return the favour and come to listen to you respectfully and attentively. This, in turn, will actually motivate them to be more productive and energised in your company, as they know they have a strong friendship with mutual trust and respect. Therefore, your personality is extremely important when it comes to motivating. If you're not someone who people can make friends with easily, the harder it will be for people to want to listen to you, and therefore any chance you have of motivating others will be lost.
Another kind of authority that you may have, apart from that which is gained through knowledge, is when you actually hold a position of authority at work. After all, unless you're the head of a company or your own boss, whenever your superior asks you to do something, you do it - this is how it is when someone has authority over someone else. Therefore, if you're someone's boss, you hold the same type of authority over him or her. Yet this isn't the only type of motivational authority out there.
Another type of authority you may have is the type associated with knowledge. This type of motivation is just as powerful as the traditional authority types; when someone is so knowledgeable about a subject that they become a master of it, then the respect they gain from people is very powerful indeed. People will admire you for the knowledge that you show, and this will motivate them to want to be as knowledgeable as you.
There are many ways you can motivate someone, and it doesn't just come from authority. Whether it's because you're liked by someone, or loved even, just the fact that they listen to you and ask for your advice is a sign that you motivate them. Although, in a way, this is still motivation through authority, since that person will not want to let you down, and that in itself is a strong motivational reason.
Whatever the reason for your skills in motivation, the end result should be one that brings happiness to both yourself and those that you're motivating. Since many people today do not feel as if they matter or can make a difference, just knowing that you've helped change one person's life for the better can offer no better motivation to do something good, not just for yourself but other people too. |
