Get Your Life Together!
START RELYING ON YOURSELF
Can you support yourself in a new life? Sure, there are people who arrive in new cities with nothing more that a couple of dollars in their pockets and a dream and wind up heading huge corporations. These tales are extraordinary, however, because they simply do not happen to everyone. Before you kick out your bum of a roommate or move to a new town alone, you should be as close as possible to being able to sufficiently support yourself without any help. This may mean having a nice savings account in place, or even just having the abilities necessary to get a job in a new town. If you arrive in a new town with a couple of dollars in your pocket, full of dreams but unable to secure a job because of your lack of skills, you will probably not fare too well. This isn't to say that you should avoid leaving a destructive situation because you don't have money in the bank or occupational skills…many people have done so and succeeded. If you have an inkling that you will eventually be in a situation of starting a new life, however, you should make whatever preparations you can in anticipation of what the future might bring.
Have you ever supported yourself before? If you have never had a chance to live on your own and support yourself, you’ll probably be in for a rude awakening when you first try it yourself. Just keeping a small apartment running takes an incredible amount of money in some cases, between the rent, electricity, phone bill, cable bill, water bill, and all the other utility bills in addition to all your other obligations like groceries, a car payment, and any other bills you might already have. Once you get the hang of paying all these bills, however, you will find a real satisfaction attached to being self-sufficient. It can certainly be a little scary to know that there is nobody you can fall back on if you get yourself into some sort of financial mess, but it sure is a great feeling to look around your apartment or home and know that everything you see are things you worked hard to get. If you have always lived with parents or a spouse or someone else who aided you financially, you will probably be a little apprehensive about taking care of yourself, but you might also really enjoy taking care of yourself once you dive in and figure out a viable system in order to do so.
It probably won't be easy. Financial considerations aren't the only scary aspects of living on your own for the first time. Many people love the idea of coming home to another person waiting for them, and when you live on your own you're coming home to an empty place. Unless you get a roommate or a very affectionate pet, you will need to grow accustomed to the fact that you're the only one living in the home or apartment. You never know, you may grow to like the stillness that accompanies living alone and find that you actually prefer it, at least for now.
Starting over can be really scary, especially when it entails starting a whole new life somewhere new without all the familiar faces you are used to seeing everyday. Starting over, however, may turn out to be just the thing you need to turn your life around. Before you decide to move yourself to a new place and seek out a whole new life, try to do a little research on the location so you aren't unprepared for what it will be like. However, don't let fear of the unknown stop you.
